So here we are. The first bloggy post of possibly many. That’s if I can get used to the idea of rambling entries that other people can view – not really something I am used to. I had a big pile of diaries and journals that I diligently wrote in through-out high school, uni and beyond. Thank god for my pc though since I was on my way to early RSI if it hadn’t been for my trusty Aptiva. Yes people, that’s right. I am proud to admit that at one stage I was the owner of legit IBM hardware – warranty and all (aka Craptiva). I have since learned the error of my ways and moved to… erm…*cough* Sunlit *cough*.. ok, maybe I have a little further to go yet. But with the help of my trusty geek-boy, I should now be on the right path.
I’m still working at VB and loving almost every minute of it (except for the late night phone calls when there are issues). I especially love the fact that I have been lucky enough to be sent to Vanuatu for a few days last month to suss out their IT requirements etc for our first flight there. I don’t care that it was overcast and rainy the whole time and that we had to trudge through mud to get to the boat that took us to the resort… I don’t care that we took a taxi ride from hell at 11pm on a rainy night, along a windy road while the car proudly displayed all the lights on the dashboard – like the oil and petrol ones (always a winner)… I don’t even care that me having a hot steamy shower early in the morning set off the smoke alarm in my cute little bungalow.. more than once…. I don’t even mind the fact that coconut crab is no longer a local speciality since it is now an endangered species. What I did mind was the local currency conversion rate! The rate was something like $1 AUD = 75 VATU. That’s not a head math one. Lucky for me I had my trusty mobile with built in calculator! You should have seen me at the duty free shop at the airport going from alcohol bottle to alcohol bottle trying to figure out which one was a bargain – and for a relative non-drinker, that was quite funny in itself. Absolut vodka for $20? I _think_ that’s a good deal!
What else? I am studying IT externally and that is turning into quite a challenge. Me? I still have a limited attention span *ooh! Shiny thing!* AND limited self control *ooh! Shiny thing!* Did I mention a weird sense of humour? Lol! I’ve figured out that I am definitely not a programmer by trade. My poor attempts at Java will prove that. But I do love the fact that I am on my way to completing a degree – I’m sure mum will do a strange little chinese happy dance when I finally do graduate! Hmmm.. .that would be a sight to see! Oh, and I do love working with computers of course! You know, for movies and music and net stuff. *grin* I’m also learning chinese mandarin after years of saying that I should and I will. The course we are going to is more about conversational/business type stuff. I’ve decided that I would much rather study from about the grade 8 level instead. No, make that grade 5. I want to colour in and draw lines between things. And maybe even write words inside the word bubbles of cartoons! And then I want the teacher to give me red ticks and gold stars. Yeah, stars…..
Hmmm… what else? I’ve moved in with Nathan about a month ago now. We are still trying to settle into good habits (mostly involving me actually devoting ’study time’ to study, and us getting to sleep at a relatively reasonable hour – darn bookshelves!) but things are going well. It’s handy to go to work together and share lunches etc. It’s especially handy when we can work on work problems together, when I get those after hours phone calls. He’s my very own on-call developer!
*yawn* time for bed now. Being a school night and all! Till next time… Boi!
