Welcome to 2008 – definitely a big year for me. I finally turned 30, not that I am totally sure how I ended up here, and what really happened along the way. In some ways I feel like I must have time-warped sometime after uni and ended up 10 years into the future.. Suddenly I feel like I should be worrying about crows feet, and investing, and be able to savour a fine wine (and sound like I know what I am talking about), instead of not…
Which reminds me of something that happened recently – I was flying back home from Sydney one arvo when I dropped a Doctor Who book (new edition adventures with David Tennant I think), and it ended up under the seat in front. Since I always pack 2 books (book-geek habit), I wasn’t too phased about retrieving it straight away. Plus, since I was in a window seat, and don’t have any height necessary to be able to reach over the seat in front to tap someone’s shoulder, I decided to wait. When the plane landed I asked the guy in front if he had seen my book. He picked up the Doctor Who and said ‘Oh, this one? I thought it belonged to some kid…’ Needless to say, I took the book and ran… calmly across the tarmac of course, staying within the yellow lines
Anyway, back to the 30 thing.. I feel like overnight I should have really become ‘grown up’ and put aside childish things and instead embrace adult..um… things. In that case, there goes my DS, Playstation2, Wii, remote controlled Daleks, Asterix comics, sci-fi soft toys, Facebook… Having said that, I think I already have the stress, financial burdens and responsibility. Well, that’s if you count 2 small but totally adorable and lovable dogs. Hehehe!
I am starting to take more of an interest in my health overall, and that includes diet and fitness, although they have mostly been notional and token efforts until recently. I tried the Tony Ferguson shake diet thingy and that lasted for a few weeks. I lost a little bit of weight and started on some good habits, but I didn’t find it very sustainable. I missed the taste and texture of real food too much. Anyway, a shake for brekkie isn’t really the best way to start the day for me, not unless it is a Boost Brekkie smoothie with loads of stuff in it.
On the bright side, I am drinking a crapload more of water (thanks to my ThinkGeek purchase of a 2L water dispenser that sits next to my monitor), I am cooking with fresh fruit and vegies, I am trying to watch my fat intake, and I am definitely geared up to do more excercise. I have been meaning to learn how to run again for a while now, and I think this is the year for it! I’m thinking about the Couch to 5k running plan, combined with some weights and cardio at the gym, combined with Kinetics Combat on the PS2 for those days when I just don’t feel like the other 2. In addition to this, I want to learn how to do pilates again so I’ll be on the lookout for some dvds shortly. Between all that ‘variety’, surely I won’t get bored (or LAZY). I think I might also need to find some sources for motivation along the way. I recently stumbled across Dietgirl and I can’t stop reading it! I love the writing style and the insights cause it is really making me look at myself in a totally different light.
I’m not really a binge eater and I don’t eat that badly but I don’t do as much exercise as I should so that’s where I am going to focus this time. More exercise, lots of water, more fresh fruit and vegies, no carbs at night and lots and lots of motivation
I also don’t want to make the wedding the main focus of this fitness kick, although it sure is helping!! I’m up for lifestyle change and good habit formation. Nath and I went for a jog yesterday (more of a walk-jog-walk-walk-wheeze-jog-sprint-stagger-home YAY!) for about 2km and it took about 25 min. Definite room for improvement
but I think it’s a win just to get out of the house, put those running shoes on and get out there and do something.
So… turning 30.. I really need to start reading a few new books. Top of the list:
- “Nice Girls Don’t Get Rich: 75 Avoidable Mistakes Women Make with Money” by Lois P. Frankel
- “Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity” by David Allen
Now I actually have both these books, and have had them for over a year by now. They are both sitting on the ‘to be read’ pile on my bedside table, but since I don’t tend to enjoy reading non-fiction before I go to sleep, they keep getting overtaken by Robin Hobb, Doctor Who books or Harry Potter (I’m so glad I got to the end of that series – it was too darn addictive!). Currently they are being threatened by some new books I bought with a birthday gift voucher (thanks again guys!) – the Golden Compass trilogy, and a Thursday Next novel ‘The Eyre Affair’.
Back to the topic post – big year. Wedding plans are still underway after a few changes required due to businesses selling or double-booking. No Bridezillas here though! I’m just going with the flow of things, taking it as it comes. I might post some more on that another night.
